Travel Guide - Helsinki
Posted: 13th September 2009

In the second part of our guide to Helsinki, day-by-day this week, we will look at the various sights and sounds that you will experience in Helsinki!

DAY ONE - SUNDAY

Suomenlinna Castle

 Suomenlinna Castle

Suomenlinna, until 1918 Viapori (Finnish), or Sveaborg (Swedish), is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands (Kustaanmiekka, Susisaari, Iso-Mustasaari, Pikku-Mustasaari, Länsi-Mustasaari and Långören), and which is nowadays part of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. (Source: Wikipedia)

Explore the island's beautiful gardens, stone walls, armaments and caves. Enjoy peaceful places to sit and relax whilst viewing the views of the Gulf of Finland! Or, if you're on a tight schedule, just take an evening stroll around this area of outstanding beauty (we recommend that you check ferry times and give yourself at least a minimum of 2 hours for your trip!)

The ferry-boats leave from the Market Square between 6am and 2.20am.

Ferry

Our tip:
Buy a 24 hour Helsinki City Transport travel ticket at 6 Euros enabling free travel on one of the boats! Also consider purchasing The Helsinki Card entitling you to free travel on the ferries and water buses to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress as well as free access to all the museums. (www.helsinkicard.fi)
